Attitude can be more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures or successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill.

This story was shared to an unidentifed author by a Denver Metro Hospice Physician:

I thought that I had seen everything that He could possibly do, but I just had one of the most amazing experiences of my life, and I had to share this with everyone!

I was driving home from a meeting about 5pm, stuck in traffic on Colorado Blvd., and the car started to choke and sputter. I barely managed to coast into a gas station before it died. Cursing, I got out of the car, glad that I didn’t block the already congested traffic out front. I was also thankful that I had a somewhat warm spot to wait for the tow truck. The car wouldn’t even turn over! But, before I could make the call, I saw a young woman walking out of the “Quickie Mart”. It appeared that she was applying ice to her swollen face; she staggered and fell into a gas pump. Something was obviously wrong. I got out of my car to assist her.

Years ago, a 10-year-old boy approached the counter of a soda shop and climbed up on the stool and asked the server, "What does a hot fudge sundae cost?"

I try not to be biased, but I had my doubts about hiring Stevie. His placement counselor assured me that he would be a good, reliable busboy. But, I never had a mentally handicapped employee and I wasn’t sure that I wanted one. I wasn’t sure how my customers would react to Stevie.

He was short, a little dumpy with the smooth facial features and thick-tongued speech of Down’s Syndrome. I wasn’t worried about most of my trucker customers because truckers don’t generally care who buses tables as long as the meatloaf platter is good and the pies are homemade.

Howard County Sheriff, Jerry Marr, got a disturbing call one Saturday a few months ago. His 6 year old grandson, Mikey, had been hit by a car while fishing in Greentown with his dad.

The father and son were near a bridge by the Kokomo Reservoir when a woman lost control of her car, slid off the bridge and hit Mikey at a rate of about 50 mph. Sheriff Marr had seen the results of accidents like this and feared the worst. When he got to Saint Joseph Hospital he rushed through the emergency room doors to find Mikey conscious and in fairly good spirits.

After 17 years of marriage, my wife wanted me to take another woman to dinner and a movie. She said, “I love you, but I know this other woman loves you and would love to spend some time with you.”

The “other” woman that my wife wanted me to visit was my Mother, who had been alone for 20 years, but the demands of my work and my two boys had made it possible to visit her only occasionally.
